New York University (NYU)

New York, New York

New York University (NYU)

New York University (NYU) was established in 1831 as a private university in the West Village of Manhattan and has grown to become the largest private university in the United States. The university is composed of 14 schools, colleges, and divisions within New York City and has a major educational footprint internationally. NYU offers students the ability to study abroad within 5 campuses in London, Paris, Prague, Berlin, and Ghanai. NYU’s network of private universities offer comprehensive undergraduate, and graduate programs in several different fields including art & sciences, business, public health, performing arts, sports management, and social work. NYU prepares students for careers in the above-mentioned 8 undergraduate schools through educational, and certificate programs. The school itself is located in West Village of Manhattan in close proximity to Washington Square Park on the lower Westside of New York City.

NYU is also unique because it’s located within the historic neighborhood of Greenwich Village with no observed boundaries for the campus. The school is very spread out geographically for a city school with university facilities starting on West Houston Street to the south and continuing up to 16th Street along side Union Square Park to the north. The university also has buildings on the western edge of the village off 6th Ave and buildings to the east off 3rd Ave. As you can see, the university’s footprint is large for a private urban school. NYU’s educational landscape offers students a professional education while still allowing students to enjoy a close-knit city community. The Greenwich Village campus offers students a mini college town without boundaries within one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods.

The campus has approximately 160 buildings including lecture, residential, research, studio, resource centers, and dining facilities. The internal campus setting also provides students and employees with several types of services including health, physical fitness, library, and cultural meeting places. The issue of student housing on campus is a not challenge for NYU because the school actively competes for real estate resources within the general area of the university. NYU has purchased several local hotels and commercial properties over the years to convert into new academic, and residential facilities for students.

The physical layout of NYU’s campus is unique to Manhattan because the school uses no metal gates or natural barriers for entrance to the campus. The school doesn’t have any formal entranceways that welcome students and parents to the area. In fact, the only way you would know you were attending NYU would be the purple NYU flags outside the historic buildings. Another interesting observation about this mixed community is the students themselves. Greenwich Village is a very mixed community with local residents, students, tourists, and commercial facilities all within a 12-block radius. But, you won’t find students wearing NYU apparel like most colleges I have visited. Students at NYU embrace the city culture by not relieving school colors. Washington Square South & East are the focal areas of the campus because the academic buildings, and residence halls have been designed to follow around the perimeter of Washington Square Park, which informally separates the campus into 2 parts, for easy access to students.

NYU has developed 7 freshman resident facilities within the Washington Square area to provide housing that’s in close proximity to the park, lecture halls, and the student center for easy access to student life facilities. NYU is a large school that has links to everywhere in the city on a 24-hour basis including music & theatre productions, sporting & cultural events, museums, nightlife, and restaurants. NYU’s Manhattan location also allows students to enjoy an urban landscape while having the ability to engage in professional activities and learning.

The internal campus setting provides students and employees with several types of student services including physical fitness, library services, and cultural meeting places and dining halls. NYU’s observed focal point of reference during the campus tour was the Kimmel Student, and the Bobst Library, which are the main internal student life areas of the campus. My tour guide told me that students come to the campus center to relax, and eat in the dining hall. Students also use this 10-story facility to socialize and talk about school and life. The facility is large for a private school with offices for all the student clubs and activities, and a school bookstore for students to enjoy. The external observed focal points for the university can be found along West 4th Street with students enjoying several small restaurants and deli’s within a very short walk from campus.

The published demographic information for the university describes a culturally diverse student population with students from all across the world. New York University has developed several different campuses, within it’s educational network to offer students a Liberal Arts and Science, Research, and a Comprehensive education format to enhance it’s commitment to different types of career endeavors. NYU has also developed independent affiliates with several global universities to highlight it’s commitment to global learning. Below is a description of demographics for NYU’s main campus in Greenwich Village.

The university is home to approximately 7,652 male, and 12,262 female full time students, and 544 male, and 869 female part time students. NYU also has a large graduate school population with 8,682 male, and 11,774 female students enrolled. The average age of a freshman is 18 years old. 62% of students are from out of state, mostly the Middle Atlantic. Students on campus provide a diverse multi-cultural makeup including students from all 50 states, 93 foreign countries, and Canada. 58% of students are white, 10% are African American, 18% Asian Americans, and 12% are Hispanic.

Published Academic Standards for Admission Programs

NYU has a large educational system for a private school, which offers Liberal Arts, and Sciences, Performing Arts, and Business programs. Below is a specific list of under graduate admission requirements. FYI, students who apply to NYU must choose from one of eight education schools, for example the Stern Business School.

Student Housing

The purpose of student housing is to provide safe and reasonable accommodations for students living away from home. The issue of housing and dormitory life is a critical element of overall campus life because students spend a large amount of time in their rooms. Student housing units historically come in 3 different styles including traditional corridor, suite, and apartment style units.

New York University guarantees housing for all undergraduate students (except transfers) who has filed their intent to reside on campus by the stated deadline and who have continuously registered as full time students. NYU currently has 7 resident halls for freshman students located within the Washington Square area. The school has started developing housing resources for upper classman through it’s capital improvement initiatives. NYU has developed 21 apartment style-housing units for upper classman.

Many of the apartments are new, and beautiful, but only upper classmen can rent them. The down side to renting these units is the distance to academic buildings. NYU has purchased some old hotels and apartment buildings that are located as far away as Gramacy Park on Irving Place and East 18th Street, which is approximately 13 blocks from the main campus. Information about housing can be found on the quick links page of this document.

The university has also published a document called “ A Guide to Living “ that gives everyone who lives on campus a roadmap that addresses emergency procedures, codes of conduct, access control procedures, and many other very useful items. It’s the best document that I have ever seen that details almost every potential situation or event.

Off Campus Housing

NYU has been described as a mini-city in a downtown muti- cultural residential community. The reason I have mentioned the overall community of Greenwich Village is to re-assert the point that NYU’s network of affiliated campuses has encapsulated it’s real estate holdings within the area. The campus footprint allows almost every student to have housing within walking distance to the campus. The issue of off campus housing has a different feel to it compared to other university off campus housing demands.

The demand for housing, especially off campus housing is usually a tough issue for institutions attempting to keep students within the general geographical area. NYU has addressed this issue by buying up residential buildings and developing housing networks. Information about off campus housing can be found on the NYU quick links page of this document.

Campus Life

New York University is a multi-cultural campus environment that provides students with an excellent social, and educational atmosphere. The admissions demographics paint a picture of a very diverse community with students from all over the world. The local community of Greenwich Village only adds to the universities international status because the community has multi-cultural roots as well. NYU also addresses the issue of ecology in a positive way. The physical environment is clean and well maintained and the economic conditions are favorable to students and local residents due to the available services in walking distance to the school.

The emotional climate and culture of the entire NYU community is social due to it’s close relationship with community, it’s mature student population, and educational resources in my opinion. NYU is an attractive institution because it offers students real world professional experiences in New York City, while providing relationships with local organizations and community groups through student activities for everyone to enjoy throughout the year. This issue of school culture is also a very important part of campus life because everyone wants to have a connection and emotional fit to their new school and community.

This issue of school culture is also a very important part of campus life because everyone wants to have a connection and emotional fit to their new school and community. NYU has done a great job developing positive social systems with it’s students by providing a series of coordinated programs including workshops and seminars for freshman students. This type of process provides a foundation for learning and personal growth providing over 407 academic clubs, student organizations, and over 16 intramural sports activities.

Campus life at NYU is more than academic excellence; it’s about building personal relationships with students and facility that continues throughout each student’s career. The school also offers students the ability to enjoy school sports, fraternities, performing arts, history, cultural events, restaurants, and local museums. For example, the City of New York has hundreds of venues to enjoy the previously stated activities including the Metropolitan Art Museum, Madison Square Garden, and Carnegie Hall to mention a few.

The university also has several global education centers within it’s campus network for students to learn, and gather information about international careers. The down side of sports activities on the Greenwich Village campus is the distance to the Palladium Center (Sports Center) on 14th Street. Students can walk to the Palladium 8 Blocks, or they can take school’s campus shuttle. The up side is the exercise facilities within the Palladium Fitness Center are fantastic. Finally, NYU participates in 24 NCAA Division I, and III Varsity Sports for Women and Men.

Public Transportation

New York University has developed a student shuttle system that connects students with the main campus adjacent to Washington Square Park through several different shuttle bus routes. In formation about this service can be found on the quick links page of this document. The New York City Transit System also has a several subway stations on 14th Street that offers riders the ability to access several main lines including the 7th Ave Line (1, 2&3) at 14th and 7th Avenues and the Union Square Station at 14th Street and Union Square East & West for (Green 4,5,6 trains). The Seventh Ave Line (#1 Train) connects with every other subway line within the system including New York Penn Station.

Students can also take the (Red #1train) south from 14th Street & 7th Avenue to Lower Manhattan World Trade Center and the South Ferry. The # 1 train can also take riders north on 7th Avenue to (Upper Manhattan, Washington Heights) in a relatively short amount of time. Local Path (Port Authority NY/NJ) train service can also be found at 2 locations in Greenwich Village. One station is located on Christopher Street, the second on West 8th Street & 6th Avenue.

Regional Public transportation resources can also be within New York Penn Station that links with trains to Long Island and New Jersey through the LIRR and Jersey Transit respectfully. Amtrak also uses Penn Station as a major hub within it’s Northeast Corridor. All these trains can be linked by the #1 train, which makes stops at Penn Station. Riders who wish to go to northern New York State can catch a shuttle train at 42nd Street from the # 1 train to Grand Central Station for the Metro North Trains.

This complex train system also allows riders the ability to travel to Liberty Airport via Jersey Transit, and Kennedy Airport via the N.Y. Subway system. People who live, work, and visit New York usually travel by some type of mass transit. Students should be encouraged to purchase a metro card to get around. Mass transit information can be found at: http://www.mta.info

Community Profile

The Greenwich Village (West Village) area of Manhattan has been identified on maps geographically as north of 14th Street, and south of Houston Street between Broadway and the Westside Highway. The community has been described in different ways, including a tourist heaven due to the high number of restaurants and galleries within the area. Greenwich Village also borders the East Village, and Tri-Beca, which offer residents, and visitor’s additional commercial resources within walking distance. The area can also be considered an upscale residential community with historic brownstones and modern apartments buildings lining several streets. The village also has several shopping areas including 6th Avenue, Broadway, and 14th Street to the north of campus. And finally, the village has international restaurants and nightlife along several Avenues including Bleecker & Lafayette Streets in the heart of the community. Student population and historical neighborhood architecture can be found mainly within 4 blocks of the park within the overall neighborhood. The greatest number of residents in this area is in fact students, and employees of NYU.

The community has a real artsy/welcoming type feel to it because a large number of people live, work, and study within the area. New York City itself is a maze of local neighborhoods that are unique to the people who live and work in them. Greenwich Village can be considered a mixed residential area because you have commercial, residential, cultural, and intellectual all within the same block with people walking through the NYU campus on their way to work, or home. The area around the park is a major pedestrian walkway in the West Village for NYC residents, tourist, and commuters because it’s really in the middle of the city. That’s why you can find endless shopping and restaurants in midtown between Houston and 14th Streets.

The issue of walking alone at night outside the perimeter of the campus gates should be curtailed because you’re in a big city with big city crime. 7th Ave becomes less populated after 7:00PM due to the large commercial establishments in the area. Chelsea has several community parks and ball fields including the Chelsea Pier on the Westside Highway but local police officers have told students to exercise some caution when using the city parks after dark.

Community demographics

The following demographics for New York City describe a multi-cultural community within a total population of 8,214,426 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The median age of population is 35.9 years old. 76.3% of residents are 18 years old or over and 12.1% of city residents is over the age of 65. Local weather

Weather is also an issue to consider for students preparing for a university experience. New York City enjoys all four seasons of weather including rain and snow. Northeast weather patterns sometimes allow for temperatures to drop below 32 degrees for a considerable amount of time during the winter. New York City also gets it’s share of rain during the spring and summer months as well.
